This is a natural small lake lying at 1010 meters above sea level, near the homonymous little church, in the Ligurian Alps of Alto municipality. It originated recently, likely during the XVII century, because of a landslide. In the past the church was named “Madonna del faggio” (meaning “Our Lady of the beech”). It has a depth of a bit less than 3 meters and a diameter of about 15, a muddy bottom and a few rocks reaching the surface. Waters are cloudy and during the summer they are often covered by floating algae. It is subject to a gradual filling up and it has been restored a few decades ago. A perennial source feeds it, and probably there is also a subterranean one. It has no effluents and water flows down thanks to soil permeability. This site has a great importance for amphibian fauna. Considering the Odonata, there are 12 species here, the most important being Libellula quadrimaculata and Cercion lindenii, reaching here its highest altitude in Piedmont.
