Bogs and small lakes at "Colle della Lombarda"

All the upper part of Vallone d'Orgials (upper Stura di Demonte valley) is punctuated with small lakes and bogs attended in the short summer season by numerous dragonflies. The area is crossed by the road leading from Vinadio to Isola 2000 resort in France passing by the Colle della Lombarda (Lombarda Pass). So they are easily accessible, but they are threatened here because of a mismanaged grazing practice (herds being often led to water in those wetlands, causing sometimes real ravages). Some excellent places lie just along the road, others are not far away just walking upstream (e.g. the small lakes at the base of the Maladecia western wall). All of them lay at an altitude between 2000 and 2250 meters above sea level.

Sympetrum fonscolombii (mainly in migration period – see bibliography) and Aeshna juncea are the species most easily observed and well known. Among rarities you can see here Somatochlora alpestris. Recent research, more attentive, led to discover a population of Aeshna cyanea in the Maladecia lakes.
