Anax imperator Leach, 1815

This is the biggest of european dragonflies (66-84 mm). Males can be identified thanks to the uniform green thorax and the blue abdomen with a large black central band. Females can be separated from the A. parthenope ones by the lack of occipital tubercles.

Ii flies from May to October, with a peak from June to August.

Common in all waterbodies with abundant riparian vegetation.

Widespread from northern Africa to Europe, this dragonfly is quickly expanding its range northwards. The species in the Cuneo region is widespread in the wetlands of the plain, where it can be found with many individuals. Its distribution in alpine areas does not spread beyond valley bottoms.
